The Country

The story of Trecastagni seems to begin in the early fourteenth century as a witness: the date of the merger, 1302, engraved on the bell of the church of Misericordia or Bianchi and historical tales of Brother' Michele From Piazza and Fazello the struggle between French and Catalani , when the country suffered an invasion of Simone Chiaramonte, filo-french, to oust the general Artale Alagona, Catalan. Until 1640 Trecastagni was one of the hamlets of Etna woods under the jurisdiction of tax and bishop of Catania, in that years with Viagrande and Pedara was sold with the title 'Prince of Trecastagni ', for 42,000 crowns, to Giovanni Di Domenico.

The etymology of the name is uncertain, and there are several hypotheses:

  • Tres castaneae, name of the site where they found three large chestnut
  • Tres Casti Agni, or 'the three chaste lambs', with reference to the holy martyrs Alfio, Filadelfo and Cirino, compatroni of the country to sostarono on site during their transfer from Vast in Lentini, a place of martyrdom
  • Tria Castra, difficult to interpret, but that presumably refers to three camps of war
